What is a Boundary Waters Canoe Trip?

A Boundary Waters canoe trip is many things.  For many visitors it is escaping to a wilderness area and experiencing the solitude of canoeing and camping in a vast forest filled with thousands of lakes, waterways and portage trails.  It is an area teeming with fishing opportunities, many offering the fishing experience of a lifetime.  For others it is the adventure of paddling, portaging and seeing as much of the wilderness and lakes as possible.  The area is filled with picturesque views and home to a vast array of wildlife, in many instances in the lower 48 states, found only here.  Moose, wolves, lynx, eagles, otter, mink, bear, vultures, ravens and more.  Whatever your goal, the Boundary Waters offers you a camping and canoeing experience found only here.  The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a vacation you will long remember and one that calls many of its visitors back year after year.

How to Plan a Boundary Waters Trip

This is where an experienced, professional outfitter comes into play.  We, Boundary Waters Outfitters, are here to help you in any way we can.  Whether it be, supplying you with everything you need, from equipment to food, or supplying you with what you need to fill in the gaps of your own equipment.  We are also here to help plan your trip route, give insight into the areas you will travel and make all the permit reservations to enter the wilderness.  Below is a list of how we begin planning your trip.

When planning a Boundary Waters Canoe Trip we begin with the following:
Step 1:
What do you want to do?  This could be daily travel or a basecamp, fishing, photography, solitude, historic sites, and so forth.
Step 2:
What are your Vacation Dates?  When do you want to go and for how long?  A typical canoe trip is about 5 to 7 days in length with an additional night spent at the resort before your trip begins.  We can plan a trip and outfit you for as many or as few days as you want.
Step 3:
Plan your route.  With the above information we will unroll the maps and begin planning your route through the wilderness.  This involves selecting an entry point, route and exit point, as well as informing you of fishing opportunities, historic sites, and other points of interest along your trip.  An in-depth orientation will take place when you arrive at the resort.
Step 4:
Reserve your Entry Permit.  We take care of this for you.  The important thing to remember is permits are based on a quota system and are reserved on a first come, first serve basis.  So, early reservation are a GOOD idea.  The best time to plan a trip is in January or February.  Trips can be reserved much later but you may select an entry point that is full and need to look at more route options.   Another important note is, group sizes are limited to up to 9 people per party.  So, if you have more than 9, you must break up into multiple traveling groups.
Step 5:
Final Touches.  From here on out it is packing and anticipation of the trip to come.  If you are selecting a complete outfitting package, We are supplying you with everything, we will mail you a trip packet with a menu that you will fill out and send back.  Now sit back and dream about your trip.  It's as easy as that!
